Comrade Chika Nwoba, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and social media influencer, has accused the Ebonyi State government, led by Governor Francis Nwifuru, spending taxpayers money on frivolous projects.

During a meeting with journalists in Abakaliki on Saturday, he expressed concern that critical sectors of the state had been neglected while billions of Naira were being wasted on trivial initiatives. Nwoba stated that it was astonishing that the authorities were prioritizing insignificant projects at the expense of essential ones.

“The PDP in Ebonyi State takes this opportunity to criticize the APC-led government for its irresponsible spending of Ebonyi people’s money on frivolities—things that currently hold no significance for our society—while the urgent needs of the state have either been entirely overlooked or treated with indifference,” he asserted.

“We have observed the government spending billions on these trivial projects, and the recent hosting of the wife of Nigeria’s president was particularly troubling. While we have no objection to hosting the president’s wife, the amount of public funds expended on this event is unacceptable, especially when our citizens are suffering from hunger and abject poverty.

“It is deeply concerning to see the government recommissioning an airport project that had already been inaugurated two years ago, using the president’s wife as a façade for this wasteful and theatrical endeavor. Such actions are disheartening, especially when teachers in the state have yet to receive their October salaries, even as we approach the middle of November 2024. This exemplifies the government’s neglect of its constituents.

“On this basis and more, we urge the government to reconsider its wasteful expenditures and start addressing the real needs of the people of Ebonyi State. It is alarming that citizens do not feel the impact of government actions despite the fiscal resources at its disposal. The PDP is deeply concerned about these regrettable developments and calls on Governor Nwifuru’s administration to fulfill its mandate by focusing on the immediate needs of the state and its citizens during this time of significant economic hardship.”

Attempts by our correspondent to obtain comments from the state government were unsuccessful. Messages sent to the Commissioner for Information, Engr. Jude Okpor, went unanswered at the time of reporting, on Saturday.
