The Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESiRS), Mr. Emmanuel Ekene Nnamani, has urged the local business community to embrace the state government’s tax reforms as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainable development.
Nnamani issued this call on Thursday during the inaugural Business Community Interactive Forum on Tax Matters at ECCIMA House, Enugu.
The forum, themed “Building Synergy in Achieving Enugu State Development Through Tax Policies & Administration: Government and Business Community Roles,” was organized in partnership with the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (ECCIMA).
Addressing the forum made up of market leaders, road transport officials, and other stakeholders, Nnamani underscored the transformative vision of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, characterizing it as a pivotal moment for the state.
He stated, “This administration is committed to ensuring that Enugu competes with the best economies globally. For this to happen, the business community must recognize the significance of tax compliance and its vital role in driving development.”
Nnamani reassured attendees that efforts are being made to enhance the ease of doing business in the state.
While acknowledging the trust deficit created by previous administrations, the ESiRS Chairman emphasized the “urgent need for renewed trust between the government and the business sector. We are here to change that narrative and provide you with reasons to believe in this government’s vision,” he said.
He further encouraged stakeholders to view tax payments as a civic duty, adding, “Paying your taxes is not merely an obligation; it is a commitment to our state’s progress.”
The ESiRs boss disclosed that the taxes collected in Enugu are as follows;
Personal Income Tax Direct Assessment
Personal Income Tax. PAYE
Land Use Charge
Capital Gains Tax
Purchase/Entertainment Tax
Motor Vehicle License
Burrow Pit/Mining Truck Toll
Stamp Duty
Informal Sector Taxes-E-ticketing system
Withholding Tax
Earlier, the President of ECCIMA, Sir Odeiga Jideonwo, praised the initiative as a crucial step toward sustainable economic development.
“This forum offers a vital opportunity for stakeholders to identify and address the barriers that hinder business growth in Enugu,” Jideonwo remarked.
He expressed concerns about the proliferation of levies and taxes across local government areas, noting that such practices have historically led to business closures, job losses, and diminished operational capacity within the state.
Jideonwo advocated for legislative reforms to establish a centralized tax framework, highlighting its importance in creating a more investment-friendly environment.
“Addressing these challenges is essential for maintaining existing businesses and attracting new investments.” He also lauded Governor Mbah for his visionary leadership and dedication to the state’s advancement.
Participants at the forum praised the initiative and called for ongoing dialogue between the government and the business community.
The forum concluded with a resolution to document decisions made, which will serve as a resource for shaping tax policies and driving reforms in Enugu State.
