A resident of Bauchi State, Muhammad Ibrahim, has called off his wedding after medical tests revealed that he and his fiancée, Fatima Abdulqadir, are genetically incompatible.
In a Facebook post shared on November 21, 2024, Ibrahim announced the cancellation of their wedding, originally scheduled for November 29, 2024.
He explained that both he and Fatima are AS genotype carriers, significantly increasing the risk of having children with sickle cell disease.
Ibrahim, a Zoology graduate from Bauchi State University, revealed that they learned of this compatibility issue only last month after undergoing tests at two separate hospitals to confirm their genotypes.
Though the couple had been in a relationship for three years, they had not prioritized genotype testing, assuming there would be no complications.
In his Facebook message, Ibrahim expressed, “Dear friends and family, it is with a heavy heart that I announce the cancellation of my upcoming wedding.
“Due to unforeseen genetic compatibility issues, my partner and I have made the difficult decision to part ways.”
He described the revelation as a “devastating shock,” emphasizing that their inability to move forward with the wedding has left him heartbroken. In discussions with our correspondent, Ibrahim mentioned that some family members had encouraged them to continue with their plans, but they ultimately chose not to proceed.
He noted that the decision was rooted in concern for the health risks posed to future children who might inherit the sickle cell trait.
The couple’s choice has garnered sympathy from friends on social media, with many praising their courage.
Ibrahim concluded his post by requesting prayers and understanding during what he referred to as a “dark hour.”
“It’s for the unborn children not to suffer,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “This is a wake-up call for everyone to prioritize genotype testing early in relationships.”
