The Court of Appeal in Lagos has officially discharged and acquitted Dr. Olufemi Olaleye, Medical Director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, of charges of defilement and sexual assault involving a minor.
Previously convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court on two counts, Dr. Olaleye mounted an appeal against the verdict, contesting both his conviction and the severity of the sentence.
In a judgment delivered on Friday, the Court of Appeal upheld Dr. Olaleye’s appeal and dismissed all charges against him.
It is worth noting that the court had reserved its judgment in October regarding Dr. Olaleye’s appeal.
Earlier, Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court had sentenced Dr. Olufemi Olaleye to life imprisonment for the sexual assault of his wife’s 16-year-old niece.
During the sentencing, Justice Oshodi remarked that the prosecution, represented by the Lagos State Government, had presented a compelling case, supported by substantial evidence against the defendant.
