Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has emphasized that tourism is not merely an economic engine; it is a vital bridge that connects cultures, fosters understanding, and promotes sustainable development.
Mbah, represented by his Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, made these remarks during the opening of a two-day workshop on domestic tourism in Enugu this past Saturday. He proclaimed Enugu as the ideal starting point for tourism in Nigeria.
“As we celebrate the tourist sites I’ve highlighted in Enugu, I urge everyone present to remember that charity begins at home. When you think of tourism—especially domestic tourism—let Enugu be your first choice. Indeed, our future begins here,” she remarked.
The governor’s representative commended the workshop organizers for honouring individuals dedicated to advancing tourism and hospitality in the region.
“Jands has long been a pillar of excellence in the tourism and hospitality sector, not only for its commitment to quality service but also for recognizing those whose hard work and innovation propel this vital industry forward,” she stated.
In her welcome address earlier at the event, the Coordinator of the Workshop and Director of Jands Travel Business School, Mrs. Chioma Obi, explained that the workshop arose from the urgent need to unlock Nigeria’s domestic tourism potential.
“With our rich cultural heritage, diverse natural landscapes, and resilient people, the time has come to build a robust and sustainable tourism ecosystem,” Mrs. Obi stated.
She highlighted the gathering’s purpose: to foster collaboration between the private sector and the government while encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship throughout the country.
Looking ahead, the Jands director expressed, “In five years, we envision a Nigeria where domestic tourism flourishes as a vibrant economic sector, creating jobs, preserving culture, and driving local development. Initiatives like this workshop lay the foundation for a future where our local destinations are celebrated and recognized on a global scale.”
Obi also introduced EnuguXplore, a platform aimed at showcasing Enugu State’s rich tourism potential. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between local attractions and tourists, providing a seamless experience that highlights our culture, cuisine, natural beauty, and history. The experience you enjoyed at the Tribe by Veronica during yesterday’s welcome ceremony exemplifies the collaborations that drive meaningful progress.”
Regarding the 2024 Jands Visionary Awards, Obi shared, “This initiative is part of the workshop’s mission to recognize and celebrate excellence in travel, tourism, hospitality, arts, culture, entrepreneurship, and humanity.”
Obi addressed the topic, “The Role of Tourism Education in Advancing Domestic Tourism: Unlocking Opportunities through Knowledge, Networking, and Personal Development.”
All speakers, including NANTA President Olayinka Folami, shared their experiences in the tourism sector, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the private sector and the government.
Folami noted that the workshop’s timing is critical, reiterating its theme: “Exploring A Synergy To Boost Business & Entrepreneurship.”
He added that the workshop’s outcomes would explore new avenues for growing business through tourism in the country. “The workshop yielded rich discussions that will invigorate the hospitality and tourism sectors in Nigeria,” he concluded.
Among the speakers were Ayodeji Awomoyi, Chief Ben Etiaba, and Barrister Pat Igwebuike.
The event’s highlights included awards of excellence presented to Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah and Commissioner Dame Madueke, along with a panel session where participants posed thoughtful questions that were addressed by the speakers.
