Industrialist and businessman Chief Akai Egwuonwu formally declared his candidacy for the upcoming Anambra South senatorial by-election on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) on Sunday.
The announcement took place at his residence in Amichi, Nnewi South local government area, drawing APGA leaders and stakeholders from all seven local government areas of Anambra South.
In his declaration speech, Chief Egwuonwu sought the support of APGA across all seven LGAs, emphasising that it would be just for Nnewi South, part of the same political bloc, to take this opportunity.
Outlining his legislative agenda, Chief Egwuonwu identified three key areas where he intends to focus his energy and creativity if elected to the Senate.
The first is security; he acknowledged the unique security challenges facing Anambra South and pledged to tackle these issues promptly, building upon the achievements of the late Senator Ubah. Secondly, he committed to promoting small and medium-sized enterprises through grants.
Drawing from his interactions with small business owners across Anambra South and the support provided by the UK Government to small businesses, Chief Egwuonwu highlighted that enhancing funding options for these enterprises will be a priority for him if he becomes the Anambra South senator.
Finally, he pledged to employ all legislative tools, including motions, bills, and oversight, to advocate for the interests of his constituents.
Among those present were Chief Maja Umeh, a member of APGA’s Board of Trustees, Barr Egwuoyibo Okoye, Hon. Barr Kingsley Iruba, Hon. Van George Ezeogidi, and Azubuike Osuchukwu, along with numerous other stakeholders from Nnewi South, all rallying for support from the other six LGAs for Chief Akai Egwuonwu’s candidacy.
