The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (COAS) during Tuesday’s plenary session.
This confirmation followed the adoption of the Committee on Army’s report concerning Oluyede’s screening.
The report was presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua (APC-Katsina).
Yar’adua expressed the committee’s admiration for the nominee’s impressive credentials, highlighting his understanding, accomplishments, and excellence.
He stated that Oluyede’s nomination aligns with Section 217, Subsection 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.
Additionally, he confirmed that the nomination complied with the provisions of Section 18, Subsection 1 of the Armed Forces Act.
Yar’adua explained that the nominee possesses the necessary competence, experience, and educational qualifications required for the Chief of Army Staff role.
He noted that Oluyede had been cleared by the DSS and had followed the proper process of promotion, qualifying him for this esteemed position.
After diligently conducting a thorough screening, the committee was satisfied with Oluyede’s conduct and qualifications and urged the Senate to confirm his nomination.
The Senate subsequently confirmed Oluyede as the substantive COAS.
