Dele Farotimi, a human rights lawyer and social critic, has been swiftly prosecuted and remanded in a prison in Ekiti State following his detention by police on Tuesday.
Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), provided an update on the situation via his X page on Wednesday. He reported that Farotimi faced a rushed prosecution and was imprisoned after a judge denied him bail.
The judge further ordered Farotimi’s remand until December 10, when the case is scheduled to be heard in court.
Sowore expressed his dismay, stating, “The Nigerian justice system is deeply flawed. As expected, Dele Farotimi has been hastily prosecuted and sent to prison after being denied bail by a judge in Ado Ekiti, who was pre-arranged to carry out this decision.”
He also implicated Afe Babalola, a prominent Nigerian lawyer, and the judicial system in Farotimi’s arrest, which has drawn significant criticism on social media.
“The Police, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, and the judicial officers had it all planned out even before they sent the goons from Ekiti state command RRS (formerly SARS) to abduct him. The case adjourned till December 10, 2024.”
