A significant fire outbreak has engulfed the Enugu Timber Market located in Enugu South Local Government Area, resulting in extensive damage and disruption to operations in the evening of Saturday, 14th December, 2024
Witnesses reported seeing thick plumes of smoke rising from the market as flames rapidly spread through the wooden structures, consuming a substantial quantity of timber and related materials. Firefighters from the Enugu State Fire Service responded promptly to the scene, working tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent businesses.
Despite their efforts, the intensity of the fire posed considerable challenges, leading to fears for the safety of individuals in the vicinity. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties, although several traders have suffered significant financial losses due to the destruction of their goods.
As of the time of this report, the cause of the fire remains unknown, with fire fighters from the Enugu State Fire Service still engaged in efforts to extinguish the blaze.
Ugochukwu Nwatu, the chairman of the Enugu Timber Association, stated that the cause of the fire cannot yet be determined, and the extent of the damage incurred is currently impossible to estimate.
Nwatu who spoke to our correspondent via the telephone said: “I’m currently at the scene of the incident. I can’t not speak on the cause of the fire nor the level of damages done because the fire is yet to be put off completely.
“When this is done, I’ll be able to give further details,” the distraught market leader said.
