A lawsuit challenging the victories of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and Bola Tinubu in 2023 has been dismissed by the Supreme Court.
Delivering the judgment on Monday, a five-member panel of judges led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji deemed it a “frivolous and vexatious suit” filed by Ambrose Albert Owuru, which contested the results of both presidential elections.
The court ruled in favour of former president Buhari, President Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the Attorney General of the Federation, awarding them N5 million in damages from the appellant.
According to information disclosed by the Assistant Chief State Counsel, Owuru’s case had previously been dismissed by the Supreme Court in 2023.
Counsel Adedayo Ogundele commented, “He sent a junior counsel, and the apex court dismissed it.”
Delivering the court’s ruling, the judge stated that Owuru’s application was “incompetent and is hereby dismissed.”
The court further commented that Owuru’s pattern of repeatedly filing suits is unbecoming of a Senior Counsel with his level of experience (he was called to the bar in 1984).
The court expressed that his actions constituted an abuse of the judicial process and that he must be penalised for wasting the court’s time.
The Supreme Court imposed a N5 million fine on the appellant, to be paid to the defendants.
