…we’re ready to prevent, combat infectious diseases – Health Commissioner

In response to the ongoing threat of infectious diseases in the country, the Enugu State Government, in collaboration with The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), conducted an impactful simulation exercise at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

State Commissioner for Health, Prof Ikechukwu Obi, boldly affirmed the government’s commitment to preventing and combatting potential outbreaks, ensuring that the festive yuletide celebrations remain safe and enjoyable for all.

The simulation, held at the Nigeria Safety and Investigation Bureau (NSIB) premises, brought together FAAN workers and various health agencies operating within the international airport, highlighting the importance of vigilance in high-risk environments.

“Enugu State faces a heightened risk of infectious disease outbreak due to its international airport, a gateway for visitors arriving in South East states for the yuletide celebrations,” Prof Obi stated. He emphasised the crucial need for awareness among airport workers, urging them to diligently examine every passenger entering the state to safeguard public health.

Adding to the discourse, Mr Hillary Umunna, Regional Airport Manager for South East Airports, represented by Mrs. Udenze Onyeka, Head of Operations at FAAN, expressed unwavering support for collaboration with the Enugu State Ministry of Health. They are committed to preventing any outbreak of infectious diseases as the festive season approaches and travel increases.

Dr Okechukwu Ogbodo, the state epidemiologist, underscored the significance of the exercise, asserting its role in equipping airport workers to take proactive measures against infectious diseases. His insights reminded them of their pivotal position in identifying suspected cases and maintaining accurate records. He urged caution, noting the rapid transmission of diseases like mpox and COVID-19, and the critical need to monitor these threats carefully.

The simulation exercise stood as a testament to Enugu State’s readiness to protect its citizens and visitors, reinforcing the message that collective vigilance is key to a safe and joyous holiday season.
