The Federal Government of Nigeria is poised to revolutionise livestock farming by establishing ranches in seven states across the nation. With an impressive N11.8 billion allocated in the proposed 2025 budget specifically for this initiative, the newly formed Ministry of Livestock Development will spearhead efforts to modernise livestock farming practices, alleviate farmer-herder conflicts, and invigorate the agricultural economy.
The budget proposal highlights a significant allocation of N315 million for “Support for the Establishment and Rehabilitation of Ranches” in states including Adamawa, Lagos, Imo, Cross River, Taraba, Kebbi, and Ogun. This bold initiative aims to transform the landscape of livestock farming in Nigeria, bringing much-needed relief to both farmers and herders.
In an effort to enhance security within grazing areas, N50 million is earmarked for installing solar-powered streetlights, ensuring safer and more productive activities after dark. The budget also outlines vital interventions aimed at uplifting the entire livestock sector.
A crucial N45 million is designated to support artificial insemination in selected grazing reserves, paving the way for improved breeding programmes that promise a brighter future for livestock production.
To tackle the persistent issue of farmer-herder conflicts, N55 million has been dedicated to training workers and task forces in conflict resolution techniques. Additionally, N85.5 million will facilitate stakeholder engagements with governors, commissioners, traditional rulers, and thought leaders, fostering collaboration at both federal and state levels.
Further investments include N118 million for pasture, feed, and fodder development in grazing reserves and ranches located in Yobe and Delta states. A further N150.5 million is set aside to provide improved seeds and resources to 200 smallholder pasture farmers across 12 states. Additionally, N94.39 million will support 3,700 smallholder livestock farmers with access to superior breeds, artificial insemination services, feed, and essential veterinary inputs.
To promote innovative practices, N150 million will fund the construction, rehabilitation, and stocking of climate-smart livestock, poultry, and micro-livestock demonstration farms in Delta, Abia, and Bauchi states, marking a significant step towards a sustainable agricultural future.
