An Abuja-based businessman, Mr Okechukwu Ugwu, has made a heartfelt plea to well-meaning Nigerians, especially the authorities of Igboeze North LGA, the Enugu State government, and lovers of humanity, to come to his aid after being afflicted by a strange ailment that has left him bedridden in his village for over two years.

Okechukwu Ugwu hails from Ogbodu, Enugu-Ezike in Igboeze North LGA. Previously an auto technician based in Abuja, his life took a drastic turn when this unusual illness struck.

“I’ve been confined to my bed for over two years,” he shares.

“It all began in Abuja, and despite my attempts to seek treatment, nothing worked. Eventually, I moved back to my village due to the escalating cost of living in Abuja. I specialised in repairing vehicle clutch plates and brake kits.”

Ugwu recounts how the illness began: “One Sunday, I felt intense pain in my abdomen. Soon after, I experienced coughing, hiccups, breathing difficulties, and general chest pain. When the symptoms persisted, I returned to my village, where I felt some improvement and believed the worst was over.

“However, upon returning to Abuja, the symptoms returned swiftly, forcing me to relocate permanently. I have been trapped in this condition ever since.”

According to Ugwu, he has resorted to borrowing for treatment. “This illness has led me to both orthodox and unorthodox hospitals, as well as prayer houses. I’ve exhausted all my savings, even selling my land in Abuja and in my village.”

He continues, “We are currently receiving treatment at a specialist hospital in Nsukka. The doctor mentioned it has affected my liver, but the cost of medication is exorbitant. The specialist doctors are doing their best, but finances are a significant hurdle. Thankfully, my friends, club members, family, and well-wishers have stood by me, but I’ve spent so much. I’ve sold my house in Abuja, and now I have nothing left.”

“I am pleading with compassionate Nigerians and organisations to come to my aid. Without medication, my situation is dire. I believe it is only through God’s mercy that I am still alive. I also struggle to afford food since I am on a specific diet, and prices are rising every day.”

Okechukwu’s wife, Ifeoma, expresses the profound impact her husband’s illness has had on their family, particularly on their children’s education. Despite their struggles, she remains hopeful.

“This sickness has brought immense suffering to my husband and the entire family. We have tried everything possible. Whoever has a solution to this ailment should step forward; it has defied all attempts at treatment. We are trusting God for deliverance from this pain. I was running a business in Abuja before my husband’s condition became critical, but I cannot leave him in the village as he requires special care.”

Dr Ifechukwu Sylvester, a medical professional, has stated that Okechukwu’s health issues warrant referral to a teaching hospital.

“Based on his medical records, he is suffering from Congestive Cardiac Failure and Chronic Liver Disease. He requires specialised care, which is typically available at a tertiary hospital, where he can benefit from the expertise of cardiologists and gastroenterologists. It is treatable, especially if addressed in the early stages.”
