The Borno State Police Command has recovered three explosive projectiles concealed in a sack and discarded in the Dala Kafanti Area of Maiduguri, the state capital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, announced this in a statement on Thursday.

According to Daso, a local resident alerted police operatives to the presence of a suspicious sack in the vicinity of her home.

He noted that upon receiving the information, police operatives promptly visited the area and retrieved the concealed explosives.

Daso stated, “On January 2, 2025, at approximately 09:25 hours, following a report from Asabe James, a resident of the Dala Kafanti Area of Maiduguri, who observed a suspicious sack containing unidentified items behind her house, the command’s EOD-CBRN Base 13 Maiduguri swiftly moved to the scene, cordoned off the area, and conducted a sweep, recovering three projectiles from the sack.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the ordnance was abandoned by unknown individuals early that same morning.”

He added that after retrieving the explosives, community members were given safety advice, emphasising the importance of remaining calm to think clearly and react appropriately; being aware of their location, the explosives’ position, and potential escape routes; maintaining a safe distance to reduce injury risk; and contacting the police or local authorities with comprehensive information.

The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, reiterated the command’s dedication to ensuring public safety and security.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or activities via the following emergency contacts: 0806 807 5581, 0802 347 3293.

This recent recovery follows the earlier retrieval of 18 unexploded devices and the arrest of 721 suspects for various crimes across the state in 2024.

During the command’s end-of-year press briefing, the Commissioner highlighted achievements in crime prevention and law enforcement, crediting the successes to effective policing measures implemented by the command’s officers.
