The Nigeria Police Force announced on Sunday that operatives in Ebonyi State had arrested 17 suspects in connection with the murder of Uromchi Okorocha, who was accused by locals of using witchcraft to kill several individuals in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo Local Government Area.

In a separate incident, police operatives in Imo State engaged in a gun duel that resulted in the deaths of two kidnappers and the rescue of four victims.

Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi stated that the suspects in Ebonyi were apprehended on January 3 after they took the law into their own hands by capturing the accused and ultimately setting him ablaze before police arrived.

Adejobi explained, “On January 3, 2025, police operatives from the Ebonyi State Command arrested 17 suspects in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo LGA, for the murder of Uromchi Okorocha, who had been accused by local youths of killing several individuals through alleged witchcraft and spiritual means.

“The suspects had mobilised and apprehended the deceased, but rather than handing him over to the authorities and upholding the rule of law, they chose to act as judge, jury, and executioner.

“Tactical teams from the Uwanna Division were dispatched to the scene on a rescue mission, but by the time they arrived, the mob had already killed and burned Mr Okorocha.”

In a related development, police in Imo State successfully rescued four individuals who had been kidnapped in Ohaji LGA during a gun battle that resulted in the deaths of two suspected kidnappers.

Adejobi elaborated, “The operation took place on Saturday, January 4, 2025, following a distress call regarding the abduction of four individuals in Umuokanne, Ohaji LGA, Imo State.

“The police swiftly responded, locating the kidnappers’ hideout and engaging them in a fierce gun battle, during which two kidnappers were neutralised.

“The operation’s success led to the safe rescue of the four victims and the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, and 21 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition.”

He also noted that Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun condemned the act of jungle justice and reaffirmed the commitment of the police force to public safety.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, strongly condemns this act of jungle justice. Citizens are urged to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to report any suspected criminal activities to the nearest police station or formation for appropriate action.

“The IGP reiterates the unwavering commitment of the Force to public safety and justice for victims of violent crimes. Citizens are encouraged to collaborate with security agencies by providing any information that may assist in creating a safer society for all,” Adejobi stated.
