Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has declared Saturday, February 1, 2025, as the date for the enforcement of third-party insurance for vehicle owners.

Egbetokun made this announcement during a meeting with the Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, and his team.

The announcement was relayed through a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday, January 10.

According to the statement: “The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun Ph.D, NPM, received the Commissioner for Insurance, NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, and his team on January 10, 2025. Mr. Omosehin was accompanied by Dr. Usman Jankara, Deputy Commissioner (Technical); Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, Deputy Commissioner (Finance and Administration); Dr. Talmiz Usman, Director (Legal, Enforcement, and Market Development); Mr. Ajibola Bankole, Director (Inspectorate); Mr. Taiwo Babatola Adeoye, Special Assistant to the Commissioner for Insurance; and other NAICOM members.

“The Commissioner congratulated the IGP on his notable achievements, particularly the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Limited. He stressed the importance of police cooperation in ensuring public compliance with insurance regulations and encouraged the Nigeria Police Force’s support for the nationwide enforcement of compulsory third-party insurance, which offers significant benefits to all road users.

“In his remarks, the IGP underscored the importance of third-party insurance and reiterated that enforcement will begin on February 1, 2025. He highlighted that Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act require all vehicle owners to possess third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads. He urged all Nigerians to adhere to these regulations, as violations may result in imprisonment, fines, or both.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to collaborating with all ministries, departments, agencies, and corporate bodies to ensure the protection of lives and property for all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remains a top priority.”
