The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman who was allegedly detained due to her husband’s debts at a security office in Okija.
Rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu raised the alarm regarding the woman’s arrest, which lasted over two days.
In a statement, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, revealed that upon seeing the viral video, Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam “ordered rescue operations and an investigation into the report.”
The Commissioner expressed his condemnation of the indiscriminate detention and inhumane treatment of suspects by certain members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).
He assured the public that the underlying causes of these incidents would be addressed to prevent recurrence and has initiated measures with relevant authorities to curb the excesses of the few unprofessional AVG members in the state.
