Tragedy struck the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Sunday morning, as gunmen stormed the Eagle Parish during worship, taking the life of Prophet Yomi Adetula.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., three assailants shattered the serenity of the service, unleashing a hail of gunfire that claimed the prophet’s life. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with congregants fleeing for their lives.
State police spokesperson Omolola Odutola later arrived at the scene, revealing the grim discovery: “Police officers found Yomi Adetula, a 54-year-old man, lifeless in a pool of blood that stained his pristine white celestial garment, lying face up.
“On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets and his head was not speared… to ensure the victim was really dead, it was mangled with axe.
“On police inquiry, information further gathered that three men came into the church, brought out long double barrel gun aimed at their target and fired a shot that brought the deceased down.”
Stating that the corpse has been taken to the General Hospital Morgue, Ilaro, Mrs Odutola said efforts are on to arrest the gunmen who reportedly fled into the border.
“Normalcy has been restored while possible clues will be revealed in the coming days as investigation has been launched into the very sad occurrence,” she added.
