An undetermined number of workers are trapped under the rubble at a construction site for a two-storey building in the Ikota area of Lekki, Lagos, following its collapse.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the police have reportedly rescued two victims.
Eyewitnesses indicate that most of those trapped were construction workers on site when the building came down around 3pm on Tuesday.
Mr Adedotun Keshinro, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, stated that the corps’s disaster management team is collaborating with personnel from the Eti-Osa Police Division and other agencies in the ongoing search and rescue operation.
“A distress call from concerned residents reported that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed, trapping workers inside, around 1500 hours in the Ikota area of Lekki.
“While the search, rescue, and recovery operation continues, personnel at the scene have confirmed the successful rescue of two individuals alive,” he said.
