The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the suspected suicide of Inspector Ajele Oloyede, who allegedly shot himself in the Igbesa area of the state.
In a statement issued to journalists in Ota, Ogun State, on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, provided details of the incident.
Odutola reported that the tragic event took place around 1:20 p.m. on Friday, while Inspector Oloyede was on special duty at Goodwill Ceramic Company.
“Preliminary reports indicate that Tolorunloju Stephen, an officer from the Force Headquarters Annex in Lagos, who was also on special duty at the company, returned from Ikeja and entered the security office,” she stated.
“He found Oloyede resting his head on the table. After they exchanged pleasantries and Stephen inquired about his well-being, Oloyede responded positively.”
“Moments later, Stephen went to the restroom but soon after, he heard a gunshot.”
“Rushing back, he discovered Inspector Oloyede lying in a pool of blood.”
Odutola noted that private security personnel assisted in rushing the injured officer to Ota General Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead.
She confirmed that the firearm involved in the incident has been recovered, and the officer’s body has been taken to the hospital for an autopsy.
“The Ogun State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of Inspector Oloyede, who reportedly shot himself while on special duty at Goodwill Ceramic Company in Igbesa,” Odutola said.
She added that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the circumstances of the incident, including the potential for foul play or underlying mental health issues.
Odutola also assured that the police have promptly contacted the family of the deceased officer.
According to her, the case will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran for an exhaustive investigation.
She extended the deepest condolences of the Nigeria Police Force to the officer’s family, colleagues, and loved ones.
