Students enrolled in the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have been strongly encouraged to approach their studies with utmost seriousness, as this commitment is vital for their success throughout the programme.
Professor Clementina Obiageli Okafor, the Director of ESUT JUPEB, conveyed this message during the orientation ceremony held for new students at the Sule Ahman Complex, ESUT.
She highlighted that the one-year programme serves not only as an academic preparatory phase but also as a crucial period for character development and discipline. Professor Okafor reminded the students that their attitude towards learning and their moral conduct would play a significant role in determining their progression into full undergraduate studies.
She cautioned against engaging in activities that could jeopardise their future, such as cultism, examination malpractice, and other forms of misconduct, emphasising that ESUT JUPEB maintains a policy of strict discipline.
Additionally, she advised the new students to stay focused and avoid distractions. While assuring them of the programme’s support system, she encouraged them to seek assistance from their teachers and mentors whenever they encounter academic challenges.
In his keynote address, Professor Sunny Udeze, a former Head of the Department of Mass Communication and past Dean of the Postgraduate School, underscored the importance of ethical conduct in academic life.
He described JUPEB as a vital stepping stone to greater achievements and urged the students to uphold integrity in their studies. Professor Udeze further encouraged them to engage actively in their learning, as the habits formed at this stage will shape their futures.
Discussing the acceptable dress code and examination regulations, Dr. Chidi Ezinwa, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, stressed the importance of maintaining a neat appearance and adhering strictly to academic guidelines. He noted that discipline in conduct and presentation significantly contributes to an individual’s identity both within and beyond the university environment.
The event also featured testimonials from former JUPEB students who successfully transitioned to full undergraduate programmes at ESUT. They shared their experiences, motivating the new students to take their studies seriously and make the most of the resources available to them.
The interactive session allowed students to ask questions and seek clarifications on various aspects of the programme.
