The National Working Committee (NWC) of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently convening to discuss the recent revocation of its permanent headquarters located in the Central Business Area of Abuja.
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has cancelled the land title for the PDP national secretariat due to the party’s failure to pay ground rent.
The revocation notice was issued in a letter dated March 13, 2025.
Titled “Notice of Right of Occupancy, File No: MISC 81346, Pertaining to Plot No: 243 within Central Area District, Abuja,” the letter was signed by Chijioke Nwankwoeze, the Director of Land Administration (FCT).
Nwankwoeze cited the PDP’s non-payment of annual ground rents from January 1, 2006, to January 1, 2025, as the basis for this decision.
In response, Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, condemned the revocation order, labelling it “a drive towards totalitarianism and an attempt to stifle opposition.”
Ologunagba revealed that the order affected both temporary and permanent offices, warning that this action poses a significant threat to democracy.
He stated, “The attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to revoke the Right of Occupancy for the National Secretariat of the PDP is utterly condemnable.
“It seeks to suppress opposition in this country and represents a shift towards totalitarianism. This is a grave threat to democracy. The NWC is currently meeting, and I will provide you with a detailed response from our party shortly.
“To illustrate the severity of this action, it impacts both of our properties: the new one under construction and the Wadata Plaza, which the PDP has occupied for nearly two decades. It is an overt attempt to stifle opposition.”
