The Rivers Police Command has confirmed an explosion at the Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Bodo, located in the Gokana Local Government Area of the state.
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, made this announcement while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
She stated that details regarding the explosion are still limited, assuring the public that more information will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
The explosion, which occurred just after midnight on Monday, has damaged the pipeline that transports crude oil to the Bonny Terminal, a vital export facility.
The TNP, previously owned by Shell Petroleum Development Company, was sold to the Aiteo Group and has the capacity to produce 180,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the explosion affected a significant section of the pipeline; however, the exact cause remains unknown.
This incident comes amid heightened political tensions following the Rivers State House of Assembly’s report of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu.
