The House of Representatives has sanctioned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu announced emergency rule in response to the ongoing crisis in the state.

The president suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers House of Assembly for a period of six months.

During this time, a sole administrator has been appointed to oversee the state.

However, according to the Constitution, two-thirds of the National Assembly must approve the emergency rule for it to take effect.

At the plenary session on Thursday, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen presented it for a voice vote, and the majority prevailed.

Abbas later confirmed that 243 members were present at the session, according to the attendance register.

Earlier, Rep. Ali Isa JC proposed a motion to reduce the six-month period, which was seconded by Rep. Miriam Onuohs.
