Nigeria reignited their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 away victory against Rwanda on Friday evening in Kigali.
Victor Osimhen, who has found the net 26 times for his club, Galatasaray, in the 2024/2025 season, scored both goals in the first half.
He opened the scoring in the 11th minute. As Rwanda sought an equaliser, the Galatasaray striker struck again, doubling Nigeria’s lead and solidifying their dominance in the match.
With these goals, Osimhen has surpassed legendary striker Segun Odegbami’s record, moving to second place in Nigeria’s all-time scoring chart with 25 goals, and he is now pursuing the late Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 goals.
This victory marks a successful start for the Super Eagles under their new manager, Eric Chelle.
Chelle’s adopted formation of 1-4-4-2 provided the Super Eagles with ample opportunity to attack and contain the Rwandan national team, known as the Amavubi (The Wasps).
The previous two encounters between the Rwandan national team and the Super Eagles in Kigali had ended in draws.
