The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufi-Alike Ikwo has indefinitely suspended Mr. Alex Okemini over allegations of involvement in cult-related activities.
Until recently, Mr. Okemini served as the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ogbonnaya Nwifuru on Security for Ebonyi North. He was dismissed on Tuesday amid controversy surrounding the university’s recent Matriculation event.
Admitted as a new student to study Political Science, Mr. Okemini was spotted during the Matriculation ceremony wearing insignia believed to be associated with a secret cult. The image quickly spread on social media, prompting widespread condemnation, with many demanding the governor dismiss him and the university expel him.
In a statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Grace Umezuruike, Governor Nwifuru announced Mr. Okemini’s dismissal. Following suit, the university issued a letter to Mr. Okemini on Friday, delivering an indefinite suspension.
The letter, signed by Ifeanyi Igwe, the Registrar, stated that the suspension stems from allegations of cult-related behaviour against Mr. Okemini. The university emphasised that his actions contradict the matriculation oath he took during the ceremony.
Furthermore, the letter indicated that he would remain suspended pending a thorough investigation by the institution
The letter reads: “The Vice-Chancellor has considered the report on allegation of cult related behavior leveled against you based on the display of cultism as shown on March 14, 2025 during the matriculation ceremony of the university.
“You are hereby informed of your matriculation oath and the fact that cultism and cult related activities are unacceptable and against the rules and regulations governing students’ activities in the university as well as a security and moral threat to the University Community.
“Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of Senate, has directed that you be suspended indefinitely from the University pending the outcome of the investigation of this matter by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee of the university.
“You are, by this letter, hereby suspended from the University. This letter conveys the Vice-chancellor’s directive”, the letter added.
