…Automates court processes for speedy dispensation of justice

The Government of Enugu State has expressed its appreciation to the Federal Government for granting approval to relocate the Enugu Correctional Centre, currently situated in the GRA, and has offered to collaborate with the central government to expedite this process.

The commitment was made by Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, during a meeting at the Government House in Enugu with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions on Wednesday.

Governor Mbah conveyed to the team, led by Committee Chairman Hon. Chinedu Ogah, that the state government has long advocated for the relocation of the facility, established in 1915, to a more appropriate site.

“It is highly commendable that the Federal Government has sanctioned the relocation of the Enugu Correctional Centre, a matter we have fervently supported. You can count on us as a genuine partner, as our objectives align. We eagerly await your guidance on how we can proceed together.

“We have already conducted a survey for the new location, which we are more than willing to share with you. We would also be pleased to take you to this site for your evaluation,” Mbah stated.

He emphasised the need for automating the justice system to alleviate overcrowding in correctional centres, highlighting his administration’s initiatives towards this goal.

“We are unwavering in our commitment to our comprehensive justice reform efforts. We have fully automated our court processes to ensure a speedy dispensation of justice. This is particularly important as many inmates currently in correctional facilities are awaiting trial. By facilitating a quicker justice process, we can significantly reduce the congestion in these centres.

“Our automation extends beyond court processes to include court proceedings, meaning traditional longhand is no longer necessary, thanks to the introduction of verbatim reporting. This initiative began a year ago, and we are pleased to see it nearing completion,” Mbah concluded.

In response, Hon. Ogah praised Governor Mbah for enhancing the security of lives and property in Enugu State, noting that “people can now travel through Enugu State at any time of day without fear.”

He added that the state government’s investment in security technology and the dedication of correctional officers have prevented jailbreaks in Enugu State. Ogah also commended the governor’s developmental initiatives, which are creating jobs, fostering economic growth, and reducing crime.

The Committee appreciated the governor’s proactive approach to relocating the correctional centre by proposing a new site and also requested government support in providing vehicles for transporting inmates to and from trial sessions.
