In a strong response to the tragic events that unfolded in Uromi, Edo State on Thursday, 27th March 2027, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, led by Senator John Azuta Mbata, has condemned the gruesome murder of several Northern Nigerians, labelling the act as “dastardly” and “callous.”
Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the Publicity secretary of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to initiate a manhunt for the perpetrators.
“We call on the authorities to enforce the law without prejudice, irrespective of the perpetrators’ ethnic nationality, social status, religion or political affiliations.”
The organisation also expressed dismay at the unfounded accusations circulating on social media, which suggest that Igbo individuals in Edo State were involved in the killings.
“It is regrettable that some anti-Igbo elements, particularly from the northern part of the country, are attempting to blame the Igbo community for these heinous acts,” the statement read.
Dr. Ezechi emphasised the absurdity of such claims: “One must question how Igbos could orchestrate such an organised criminal act in a region far from their homeland. This narrative is not only baseless but also harmful to national unity.”
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo call on those making these accusations to cease their incendiary rhetoric, which we believe undermines social harmony in Nigeria.”
They further encouraged the Igbo community across the country to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
The organisation further extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, expressing heartfelt sympathy and urging for justice in light of the tragic loss of life. “We pray for the repose of their souls and call for accountability for their untimely deaths,” added Dr. Chukwu.
