Vice-President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Dakar, Senegal.

He will represent President Bola Tinubu at Senegal’s 65th Independence Day anniversary celebrations.

Shettima, who departed on Thursday afternoon, is expected to return to Nigeria on Friday.

“Senegal celebrates its Independence Day on April 4 each year, marking its liberation from French colonial rule in 1960. The day is celebrated with national pride through ceremonies, parades, and cultural events,” said Stanley Nkwocha, the vice-president’s spokesperson, in a statement.

“The Vice President’s attendance at this annual event acknowledges an invitation extended to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, reflecting the strong bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Senegal.

“The Independence Day celebrations will take place at the Place de la Nation in Dakar, where President Faye will host Vice President Shettima and other distinguished guests from across Africa and beyond.”

Shettima’s trip occurs less than 24 hours after President Tinubu travelled to Paris, the French capital.

Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, characterised Tinubu’s visit as a “short working trip”.

He stated that during the visit, Tinubu will review his administration’s achievements to date.
