A Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer and 17 others lost their lives in a tragic accident at Gbaga on the Ikorodu–Sagamu Road on Saturday.

Florence Okpe, the FRSC spokesperson in Ogun, reported that the accident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. and involved a total of seven vehicles.

The vehicles included a Toyota Hiace bus (AGL 752 YC), a Daf truck (T14007L), and a Honda car (HT680). Also involved were an unregistered Daf truck, a pickup (STF10204), and two motorcycles (AGG 448 Q, PKA 214 WS).

Ms Okpe stated that the crash was caused by the bus driver’s attempt to overtake improperly, resulting in a collision with the Daf truck.

During the rescue operation, the unregistered Daf truck experienced brake failure and crashed into an FRSC official, killing him instantly. The truck subsequently collided with a parked pickup, the Honda car, and both motorcycles, leading to further destruction.

According to Ms Okpe, a total of 22 individuals were involved in the incident; 18 lost their lives, while four sustained injuries. The injured were transported to Dasochris Hospital in Gbaga, while the deceased were taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, Ogun.

Sector Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin expressed his condolences over the recklessness that led to the tragedies on Saturday. He urged motorists to adhere to road signs and observe speed limits to prevent avoidable accidents.
