I’m not desperate to be president — Peter Obi

Yunusa Tanko, the national coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, asserts that Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), remains a dedicated member of the party.

Tanko made these remarks on Monday during an appearance on ‘The Morning Brief’, a programme on Channels Television.

His comments served as a rebuttal to assertions made by Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 SDP presidential candidate, who claimed that Obi’s associates are in negotiations with his party regarding a potential defection.

Tanko further stated that the LP leadership will soon provide clarity on their position to Nigerians, particularly in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling concerning the party’s leadership crisis.

“As far as I am concerned, His Excellency, Peter Obi, is a member of the Labour Party, and will remain so unless circumstances change,” Tanko remarked.

“As I speak, there is a meeting planned—likely this week—where the party leaders will clarify fundamental positions to the public. This is in accordance with the Supreme Court ruling, which will hopefully settle the matter.”

The LP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis that has split the party into factions.

Last week, the Supreme Court overturned an appellate court ruling that recognised Julius Abure as the LP national chairman.

In response, Nenadi Usman, chair of the LP caretaker committee, backed by Obi and Alex Otti, the governor of Abia, praised the judgment.

The LP’s House of Representatives caucus also applauded the ruling, describing it as a “tonic and elixir” for the party’s “stability and reinvention.”
