An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been killed, and three others injured in an attack by unknown gunmen in the Igbomotoru community of Bayelsa State.

The incident reportedly occurred as the officers were returning from a clampdown operation on Friday, according to local sources cited by SaharaReporters.

NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale confirmed the attack on Friday afternoon, stating, “I’m aware but I have not received a comprehensive report about the incident. I will call you when I have a detailed report.”

This tragic event follows a series of violent incidents in the region. In April 2024, three soldiers were killed in an ambush along the Nembe-Brass Road, prompting the military to launch a manhunt, blaming militants for the attack.

Additionally, in February 2024, pirates attacked a navy patrol boat in Southern Ijaw LGA, resulting in the deaths of two personnel. In December 2023, two police officers were killed at a checkpoint in Yenagoa, leading to protests over escalating insecurity.

Igbomotoru, located in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, is known for its history of militant activity. In March 2024, the military conducted a raid in Igbomotoru after tracing suspects linked to the killing of 17 soldiers in Delta State’s Okuama community to the area.
