In a tragic incident on 11th April 2025, police operatives from the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station arrested a 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, following the alleged murder of his mother, Mrs Dorathy Anyaji, aged 68. The arrest took place at around 1:40 PM after Nnamdi reportedly attempted to take his own life after the incident.

According to preliminary reports, tensions escalated between Nnamdi and his mother over the proceeds from their cassava business. Nnamdi accused Mrs Anyaji of dishonesty regarding the financial gains, which led to the fatal confrontation.

“It is a heartbreaking situation that stems from a family dispute over business matters,” stated SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command.

Ikenga added that police operatives recovered an axe at the scene, believed to be the weapon used in the alleged murder. “Nnamdi Anyaji is currently in custody and under close surveillance to prevent any further attempts on his life. He is expected to face charges in court following the completion of the investigation.”

In a related operation, police from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu conducted a raid early on the same day, targeting a suspected drug camp at Umuokpala Village in Orumba North Local Government Area. The raid resulted in the arrest of 12 individuals, all males aged between 20 and 29, who were found in possession of hard drugs, including a sizeable quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The suspects, identified as Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack, and Nwazufu Kingsley, have been handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.

SP Ikenga emphasised the police’s commitment to tackling crime in the region, stating, “We will continue our efforts to ensure that such incidents are addressed swiftly and that justice is served.”
