The Presidency has expressed concern over the emergence of billboards promoting a potential 2027 campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima in various cities, notably in Abuja and Kano.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency clarified that while President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima appreciate the enthusiasm of their supporters, they do not endorse any form of premature campaigning that violates electoral laws.
“President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support,” Onanuga stated. “However, it is crucial to note that the electoral law forbids any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections at this time.”
The statement emphasised that premature campaigning could undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages. “As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process,” Onanuga added.
The Presidency urged individuals and groups behind these billboards to cease their activities immediately, as no endorsement for a 2027 campaign has been given by the President. “Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not authorised anyone or any group to mount a campaign for him through any media channel,” the statement read.
President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima remain focused on their current responsibilities, as outlined by Onanuga. “They are fully committed to delivering the ongoing task of nation-building, with a strong emphasis on economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security.”
The Presidency concluded with a reassurance that “once INEC signals the start of the electoral processes for 2027, President Tinubu will inform Nigerians of his intentions regarding the upcoming elections.
