A man in his early 30s, identified as Utibe Eteffia, has tragically lost his life after reportedly falling victim to internet fraud, commonly referred to as Yahoo Boys, resulting in a loss of N2.5 million. The unfortunate event took place over the weekend in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Eteffia resided on Akpakoruk Street in Atan Ofot and operated a Point of Sale (PoS) business in proximity to the NUJ State Council Secretariat. Prior to his death, he had been exhibiting concerning behaviour on social media, sharing images of lit candles along with unsettling messages, including the question, “Do you believe in reincarnation?” He also urged his followers to show love and support to one another.

According to neighbours, Eteffia had begun a countdown on his social media, posting “27 days left,” and had become increasingly withdrawn. In a troubling turn of events, he reportedly gave his iPhone and ATM PIN to his sister just days before his passing.

An acquaintance, Aniefiok Isang, disclosed that Eteffia had sought rat poison from him, which he later acquired from a chemist. He subsequently travelled to his village in Ini Local Government Area, where it is believed he ingested the poison after attending church and spending time with family members. His lifeless body was discovered by family the following morning on the veranda of his home.

A search of his belongings revealed no immediate explanations for his actions; however, it has been suggested that Eteffia may have been lured into an online scam orchestrated by cybercrime syndicates, which allegedly involved his initiation into a cult-like group known as Yahoo Plus. This experience is thought to have severely impacted his mental well-being.

The tragic circumstances surrounding Eteffia’s death have stirred profound sadness within the community, prompting calls for increased awareness and support for individuals affected by financial fraud.
