A newly identified terrorist group, known as Mahmuda, has reportedly surfaced in Nigeria’s North Central region, actively terrorising rural communities surrounding the Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP), which spans parts of Kwara and Niger States.
Reports confirm that the group conducts attacks at will across communities in Kaiama Local Government Area (LGA), including Kemaanji, Tenebo, Baabete, Nuku, and Nanu, as well as in the Yashikira District of Baruten LGA, both located in Kwara State.
They have also taken control of areas within Babana and Wawa Districts of Borgu LGA in Niger State.
On Wednesday, the group allegedly attacked a vigilante group in Kemanji, resulting in the deaths of over 15 vigilantes and villagers.
According to local accounts, the group is led by a figure who has been issuing threats via voice notes and is implicated in killings, kidnappings, and ransom demands.
