The UK Home Office has revised its list of Secure English Language Tests (SELT) that are recognised for visa and citizenship applications.
These updates introduce new test formats and provide clearer global requirements, with the aim of simplifying the application process for candidates.
The existing LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT 4-skills test will be superseded by two new versions. It is important to note that results from the previous test will remain valid for a period of two years, and any unused vouchers will continue to be valid for 12 months.
The testing requirements differ depending on the type of visa being applied for:
4-skills test (reading, writing, listening, speaking):
– Skilled Worker Visa
– Health and Care Worker Visa
– Student Visa
– Start-up / Innovator Founder Visa
– Scale-up Worker Visa
– High-Potential Individual Visa
– Minister of Religion Visa
– Temporary Work (International Agreement route)
Speaking and listening only:
– UK Citizenship
– Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain)
– Partner / Parent Visa
– International Sportsperson Visa
– Representative of an Overseas Business

Tests can be scheduled through the respective provider websites, with availability typically within 28 days. It is essential that booking details correspond precisely with the applicant’s identification.
Accepted Identification Documents:
– Passport
– UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or Biometric Residence Card (BRC)
– EEA National ID (where applicable)
– Government-issued photo ID (for applicants outside the UK)
Please note that photocopies or emergency documents will not be accepted. After completing the test, candidates will receive a SELT reference number that links their results to their application.
