On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Umuode, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, the Dewdrop Foundation celebrated World Earth Day— an annual event held every April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

The community witnessed a vibrant celebration of environmental renewal as the Dewdrop Foundation, in collaboration with HRH Igwe Moses Idenyi (Ode II of Umuode), President General Chief Emmanuel Owube, and other stakeholders, launched the visionary BON Progress Park and led the planting of 160 palm trees, symbolising a collective commitment to sustainability and community development.

In her opening address, Mrs. Agatha Nnaji, Executive Director of the Dewdrop Foundation, highlighted the significance of the day. “Today, as we gather in this beautiful BON Progress Park, we celebrate our planet and commit to its preservation,” she stated.

“Earth Day is a reminder that the environment is not just a place to live, but a gift that sustains us—our homes, our communities, and all living creatures.”

Mrs. Nnaji expressed her gratitude to Igwe Moses Idenyi for his unwavering support of the initiative, saying, “Your leadership is an inspiration, and we are grateful for the direction you’ve provided in making our environment a central part of our growth and development.”

The event set a hopeful tone for action, with Mrs. Nnaji addressing the pressing environmental issues of deforestation, pollution, and climate change.

“Today is not a day of despair, but a day of hope and action,” she emphasised. “Every step we take, no matter how small, matters.”

The palm planting exercise formed the highlight of the day, representing the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

“This palm planting exercise is not only about planting trees, but it is about planting hope, responsibility, and the foundation for a better tomorrow,” she urged, calling on students to recognise their role in shaping a sustainable future.

Professor Barth Nnaji, Chairman of the Dewdrop Foundation, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the critical role trees play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. “I stand firmly against the cutting down of any trees,” he declared.

“Losing trees means losing vital resources such as clean air, water conservation, and biodiversity. We must protect them at all costs.”

He also highlighted the economic benefits of tree planting, noting, “Investing in the planting and nurturing of economic trees, such as palm, cocoa, and fruit trees, is not only good for the environment but can significantly enhance the economic well-being of our communities.”

As participants engaged in planting the palm trees, the atmosphere was filled with hope and determination. Mrs. Nnaji urged the audience to leave with a renewed commitment to the environment: “The Earth is not an inheritance from our ancestors; it is a loan from our children. We must return it to them in a better state than we found it.”

The event concluded with a collective pledge from community members to reduce waste, conserve water, and embrace sustainable living practices. The Dewdrop Foundation‘s initiative not only marked World Earth Day but also heralded the launch of BON Progress Park as a vital space for community engagement and environmental education.
