The Presidency has issued a strong defence of Nigeria’s democratic integrity in light of recent defections from opposition parties, which have prompted concerns raised by certain opposition figures and human rights advocates.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, responded to these accusations, highlighting that the recent political shifts—including Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno’s endorsement of President Tinubu and the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori—have left the opposition “in disarray”. He stated, “While the opposition elements are understandably heartbroken over the failure of their fabled grand coalition to gain traction, we find it disturbing that they resorted to peddling false allegations.”
Onanuga firmly rejected the claims that the Tinubu administration poses a threat to democracy, labelling such assertions as “baseless and exaggerated”. He emphasised, “No policy, official action, or directive from the Presidency seeks to dismantle democracy or weaken opposition.” He further remarked that allegations of bribery and coercion are merely the “idle minds of politicians” who are struggling to stay relevant.
He also pointed out the hypocrisy of those who previously welcomed defections for their own political advantage. “It is curious that those who celebrated the defection of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, are the same people shedding crocodile tears over Nigeria’s so-called drift to a one-party state,” Onanuga noted.
The Special Adviser reaffirmed the importance of democratic freedoms, stating, “Freedom of association, freedom of speech, and freedom of choice are part of the cherished ideals of democracy.” He urged critics to respect the political decisions of Nigerians who are joining the APC, asserting that these choices stem from a belief in the administration’s reforms.
In conclusion, Onanuga reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to a robust multiparty system, calling on all Nigerians to support the democratic process. “Under President Tinubu, democracy is strong, and the multiparty democratic system will continue to flourish unhindered,” he affirmed.
As the political landscape evolves, the Presidency maintains that it remains dedicated to upholding the democratic principles that have defined Nigeria’s Fourth Republic since 1999.
