Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting in Wude Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide leading to the death of the deceased on April 8, 2022.

The judge imposed the death sentence on Nwachukwu, stating that the prosecution had successfully met the burden of proof required by law, leading to the defendant’s conviction.

Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on behalf of the Federal Government, facing a 23-count charge that included culpable homicide punishable by death, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and spousal battery, among others.

During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, which included two children of the late Osinachi, who testified as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses, respectively. The prosecution also submitted 25 documents as evidence before the court.

In his defence, Nwachukwu testified and called four additional witnesses, presenting four exhibits.

Prior to the sentencing, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, made an allocutus, pleading with the court for leniency in its judgment. In contrast, the prosecuting counsel, Mrs Aderonke Imala, urged the court to uphold the law as outlined.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme subsequently sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1. He also received two years’ imprisonment for Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18, six months’ imprisonment for Count 10, and three years’ imprisonment for Count 11. Furthermore, he was fined N500,000 and N200,000 for Counts 6 and 7, respectively.
