Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, under the leadership of Senator Azuta Mbata, has expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, 21st April 2025, at the age of 88 in his papal residence, Domus Sanctae Marthae, Vatican City.
In a statement issued on Thursday night, Senator Mbata conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the Igbo nation to the Catholic community and Christians globally. “Pope Francis will be remembered as a leader devoted to reform, particularly in issues concerning the environment, climate change, and the fight against poverty and inequality,” he remarked.
The statement signed by Ezechi Chukwu, Ph.D, the Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide highlighted Pope Francis’ significant contributions to the Church and society, particularly through his initiatives on “Synod and Synodality,” which fostered open dialogue among bishops, priests, and laypeople on pressing social issues. “His compassionate approach to leadership transcended religious boundaries,” Senator Mbata noted, emphasising the Pope’s commitment to the marginalised and his historic embrace of the poor.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo also acknowledged Pope Francis’ dedication to peace and acceptance, pointing out that he was the first Pope to visit the Arabian Peninsula, a visit that laid the groundwork for interfaith dialogue. “We shall continue to appreciate the values of peace and acceptance that he preached and lived,” said Senator Mbata.
As Christians around the world mourn the loss of this exemplary servant-leader, Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges world leaders to adopt the principles of power as service to humanity, and to uphold equity, justice, and fairness. “It is our prayer that as we await the emergence of a new Pope, the will of God shall prevail,” he added.
In closing, Ohanaeze Ndigbo extends its prayers for the peaceful repose of Pope Francis’ soul.
