The Lagos State High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a driver for the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old fashion designer Bamise Ayanwola.

The verdict was delivered by trial judge Sherifat Sonaike on Friday.

Bamise went missing after boarding a BRT vehicle on February 26, 2022. Her disappearance prompted a frantic search by family and friends. Tragically, on March 3, 2022, her body was discovered on Carter Bridge in Lagos, igniting widespread grief and outrage across social media platforms. The alarming circumstances of her death, particularly as she was last seen alive on what was intended to be a safe mode of public transport, raised serious concerns.

Following the discovery, Ominikoron was arrested and charged with murder. Reports indicated that during her journey, Bamise had sent a voice note to a friend expressing fear and discomfort with the driver’s behaviour.

The case not only highlighted the need for justice for Bamise but also sparked protests in Lagos, with many advocating for enhanced safety measures for women using public transport. The incident has brought to the forefront pressing issues of gender-based violence and the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect vulnerable individuals in society.
