In preparation for the Enugu International Marathon set to take place on Saturday, the Enugu State Government has declared the closure of several key roads within the Enugu metropolis.
The Marathon, which is expected to draw athletes from both Nigeria and abroad, will span a distance of 42 kilometres.
In a public service announcement issued on Thursday evening, Dr. Obi Ozor, the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, outlined alternative routes for commuters.
The announcement states:
The Enugu State Ministry of Transport wishes to inform the general public of a scheduled metro shutdown in view of the International 42km Marathon, taking place this Saturday, 3rd May 2025.
As part of safety and traffic control measures for thousands of runners, including international athletes, selected roads will be completely closed to vehicular movement from 6:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.
Following a successful route reconnaissance, the following key metro roads will be fully locked:
1. Ogui Junction to Shoprite to Subway (Okpara Avenue),
2. Subway Junction to Radio Nigeria Junction to Kingsway Road to Prisons Junction to Akwata Junction to Mgbemene Junction.
3. Coal Camp to Police Detective College Junction.
4. Mgbemene to Ziks Avenue Junction.
5. Police Detective College Junction to Edozie to Keyeta Road to UNEC.
6. UNEC to Spar Junction.
7. Spar Junction to Monkey Roundabout (EFCC Road) and NTA Road.
8. Ike Ekweremadu Road to Okpara Square.
9. Bisala Road to Government House Road.
10. Chime Avenue, Ogui Road to Old Artisan Junction.
11. Tunnel to All Saints Junction.
12. All Saints Road to Ekulu Primary School Junction to Bridge Waters Hotel.
13. Okpara Square to Toscana Hotel to Nza Street to New Haven.
To facilitate movement and minimise disruption, commuters are encouraged to utilise the following alternative routes:
1. Police Detective College Junction to Gariki.
2. Uwani Area.
3. Achara Layout.
4. Maryland.
5. Trans Ekulu.
6. Abakpa.
7. Emene.
8. New Artisan to Mega Filling Station (Naira Triangle).
9. New Market to Golf Estate.
10. Toscana Road to Artisan to Goshen Estate to Mega to Emene.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
There will be no vehicle movement in the affected areas during the closure period. All motorists, commuters, and residents are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and cooperate with traffic management personnel.
