In a dramatic turn of events in Port Harcourt today, hundreds of women in Rivers State walked out of an empowerment programme organised by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Remi Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The protest erupted when Mrs. Theresa Ibas, the wife of the Sole Administrator, was invited to speak on behalf of the First Lady.

The atmosphere shifted noticeably when Mrs. Ibas’s name was announced, prompting chants from the audience: “We want Valerie Sim-Fubara or Remi Tinubu to address us, not the wife of an imposter! We want SIM!”

This outcry highlighted the women’s dissatisfaction with the absence of Senator Tinubu and the exclusion of Lady Valerie Sim-Fubara, wife of the elected Governor Sim Fubara, from the event.

Eyewitnesses reported that the women were visibly angered by the situation, particularly given earlier indications that Senator Tinubu would attend in person.

One protester expressed their frustration, stating, “We were told the First Lady of Nigeria would be here. If not her, then the wife of our Governor, Lady Valerie Sim-Fubara, should speak to us. Not someone representing someone who doesn’t represent us.”

Despite attempts by event organisers to restore calm, the women remained resolute in their demands, leading to a mass exit from the venue which effectively halted proceedings.

This protest is seen as a significant rejection of the current political appointee structure in Rivers State, demonstrating strong support for Governor Sim Fubara and Lady Valerie.

Political analysts suggest that this incident reflects rising tensions regarding the legitimacy of certain figures associated with recent federal interventions in the state. As of now, neither Senator Remi Tinubu nor her media office has commented on the unfolding situation.
