Honourable Chimaobi Sam Atu, representative for Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has praised the unwavering commitment of Her Excellency, Mrs Amina J. Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, towards the protection of women’s and children’s rights.

Honourable Atu, alongside fellow parliamentarians from Nigeria, is currently engaged in a legislative mission in the United States, aiming to exchange ideas and enhance their understanding of lawmaking processes.

Following a series of discussions with the parliamentary friendship group, Mrs Mohammed acknowledged their dedication to the advancement of Nigeria’s legislative competencies and procedures.

She emphasised the necessity of developing enforceable legislation that protects vulnerable groups within society, insisting that it is crucial for those disadvantaged by gender or age to receive full legal protection, which must be actionable rather than merely theoretical.

“We cannot overemphasise the role of the legislature in shaping inclusive societies. Our statutes must evolve to not only identify but actively uplift those at risk of being left behind,” Mrs Mohammed stated.

“It is time to move from rhetoric to implementation. If a nation wants to be truly democratic and humane, its laws must reflect the dignity of every child and woman, regardless of circumstance.”

In a press briefing following the productive meetings, Honourable Atu expressed his admiration for Mrs Mohammed and the UN’s steadfast commitment to defending vulnerable groups in society.

He asserted that the 10th Assembly, under the leadership of Rt Honourable T’ajuden Abas, is dedicated to enacting legislative reforms that address the issues adversely affecting the lives and progress of these groups.

“As delegates of the people, we are duty-bound to ensure that our policies work for everyone, particularly those whose voices are often unheard. That’s the true measure of parliamentary progress,” he remarked.

“This engagement has broadened our understanding and deepened our resolve to push for reforms that matter. The time to act is now, and the 10th Assembly is ready to lead that charge.”

Honourable Atu concluded by assuring that upon their return to Nigeria, they would review existing legislation related to the issues discussed, address any identified gaps, and work towards enacting new laws that ensure sustainable protections for vulnerable populations.
