The second edition of the Michael Okpara Lecture at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) saw Senator Akobundu Austin pay tribute to the late Dr Michael Iheonukara Okpara, the former Premier of the defunct Eastern Region, whom he described as a “selfless leader” with an enduring impact on humanity.

Senator Akobundu, representing the Abia Central Senatorial district, hailed Dr Okpara as a pivotal figure who transformed the Eastern Region into a thriving economic hub. “He was an icon of agricultural and industrial revolutions whose legacies continue to reverberate around the world,” he stated, referencing the profound influence Dr Okpara had on the region’s development.

As he addressed attendees, Senator Akobundu remarked, “As we gather here today in honour of this great man who led a life of austerity that his people might flourish in prosperity, let us use this occasion to immerse ourselves once again in his undying legacies.” He expressed gratitude to the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, and the university community for their efforts in sustaining Dr Okpara’s vision through the effective operation of various faculties, particularly in agriculture.

He further noted the significance of the chosen theme for this year’s lecture, emphasising that agriculture remains Nigeria’s path to food security and economic resurgence. “Dr Michael Okpara’s policies and actions provide a blueprint for this revival,” he added.

On the establishment of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Akobundu expressed optimism for the future, stating, “There is hope for a greater today and a better tomorrow if the Commission leverages on the commitment of current political leaders to pursue an agenda of revamping Okpara’s policies for legacy continuity.”

He also congratulated the university on the completion of a modern public lecture theatre, highlighting the need for continued investment in infrastructure to honour Dr Okpara’s memory. “Count me in as one of your reliable partners,” he affirmed, pledging his support for the university’s development.

In his remarks, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe described Dr Okpara as an “Iroko” tree, a symbol of strength and resilience. He revealed plans to commemorate Okpara’s legacy every two years, stating, “It’s not a coincidence that the federal government named the institution after Michael Okpara because his legacies are still visible for all to see.”

The event brought together notable figures from various sectors including industry leaders, traditional rulers, and politicians, culminating in a ceremony where the university community presented awards to Senator Akobundu.

Attendees also enjoyed a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony, marking a fitting tribute to Dr Okpara’s enduring influence.
