In a landmark event held at Universal Hotel, Independence Layout, Enugu, the Ogbako Ndigbo Nile Worldwide (ONN) officially inaugurated its Enugu State Chapter, marking a major milestone in its regional expansion across Nigeria’s Southeast.

The ceremony brought together traditional rulers, professionals, cultural advocates, and community leaders, all united under the theme “Igniting a Movement of Purpose and Pride.”

“God Ordained This Moment”: President General Reflects on Enugu’s Symbolism
In his keynote address, Amb. Dr. Akpelu Azunna E., President General of ONN, underscored the historical relevance of Enugu—the final stop in the group’s regional inaugurations.

“Though Enugu is the last in this phase of our inauguration, its historical symbolism is not lost on us. We believe God ordained this moment for a purpose,” he stated.

Dr. Akpelu also reaffirmed the group’s commitment to Igbo unity and empowerment, stressing that systemic marginalization cannot suppress the enduring spirit of the Igbo.

“The Igbo spirit remains unbreakable. Our resilience is our testimony, and we are committed to building a Nigeria where merit, justice, and unity thrive,” he declared.

A Movement Rooted in Integrity and Purpose
Explaining ONN’s distinctiveness among Igbo organizations, Dr. Akpelu said:

“We are non-political, non-partisan, and grounded in integrity, cultural pride, and people-centered service. Our movement is structured, strategic, and dedicated to elevating our people wherever they may be.”

He reiterated the organization’s core pillars: grassroots development, youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and strategic advocacy.

ONN Unveils Free Adult Literacy Program
One of the day’s highlights was the launch of the ONN Free Adult Literacy Education Program, a 10-year plan aimed at eradicating adult illiteracy across Igboland.

“Education of our adults is an investment in community empowerment and intergenerational progress,” said Dr. Akpelu, while commending volunteer teachers and promising support systems for their eventual remuneration and recognition.

While praising Southeast governors for security initiatives, the ONN President General called for more technologically advanced surveillance systems, stressing the need for community-rooted security.

He also used the occasion to issue a bold call for national restructuring and urgent reform.

“A sincere and comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria is no longer optional—it is indispensable,” Dr. Akpelu asserted. “We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a national emergency on infrastructure, education, security, and the rule of law.”

Enugu Chapter Leadership Sworn In
The high point of the ceremony was the inauguration of the Enugu State Chapter executives led by Hon. Greg Onoh. Other dignitaries present included:

  • Hon. Roland Osondu (National Secretary, Abia)
  • Rev. Elvis Oliver Okolie (Anambra State Chairman)

Iva Valley as Symbol: Hon. Onoh Connects Literacy to Heritage
In his speech, Hon. Greg Onoh linked the literacy program’s pilot site—Iva Valley Primary School—to the historic 1949 massacre of 21 coal miners who were protesting colonial exploitation.

“Iva Valley is sacred ground where our ancestors’ blood was shed… Enugu is where Nigeria’s fight for independence truly began,” Onoh stated, highlighting that the choice of Universal Hotel and Iva Valley as venues was deeply symbolic.

He reminded Nigerians of the sacrifices made by Igbo patriots, including late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and called out colonial-era defamation of the Igbo.

Onoh also referenced a legal action he filed in 2024 (Suit No. E/FHR/909/2024) seeking enforcement of the fundamental rights of the slain coal miners.
