Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood disaster that struck Mokwa in Niger State, describing it as a national tragedy.
Speaking at the Ohanaeze National Secretariat in Enugu on Thursday, June 11, 2027, President-General of the organization, Senator Azuta Mbata, offered condolences to the victims’ families, the government, and the people of Niger State.
“The news of the flood in Mokwa was received with sadness,” Senator Mbata said. “We at Ohanaeze Ndigbo see this unfortunate incident, which occurred on the 28th of May 2025 and killed over 200 people with many maimed and properties lost, as heartbreaking.”
He added, “May God Almighty grant the deceased families the fortitude to bear this painful loss. We urge them to take solace in the will of God.”
A statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, also noted that beyond condolences, the Igbo leader used the moment to urge authorities to take proactive steps toward disaster prevention. He called on the Niger State Government and other governments across the country to implement expert recommendations on environmental management and weather preparedness.
“Let this serve as a wake-up call,” he stated. “We must take measures to avoid or mitigate such disasters in the future. May such tragedies never befall us again.”
