Senator Akobundu Empowers Umuahia North Youths with Digital Skills

As part of his ongoing efforts to empower young people and promote digital literacy, Senator Austin Akobundu has continued the rollout of his Digital Skills Acquisition Programme for Youths in Abia Central Senatorial District, with the latest list of beneficiaries drawn from Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The free training initiative, which spans all six LGAs in Abia Central, is aimed at transforming at least 1,000 youths from job seekers to job creators by equipping them with in-demand Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills.

Beneficiaries from Umuahia North were selected from every ward and trained in two batches. The intensive programme covered high-demand digital disciplines such as UI/UX Design, Web Design, Graphics Design, Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing, Forex Trading, Software Development, and Data Science.

“This programme reflects Senator Akobundu’s unwavering commitment to investing in the future of Abia Central’s youths,” a spokesperson said. “His goal is to build a digitally competent generation that can compete globally and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.”

Earlier lists of beneficiaries from Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, and Osisioma LGAs were published between May 27 and May 29, 2025. The lists for Umuahia South and Ikwuano LGAs are expected to follow soon.

One of the participants, Peter Adimchinaobi Emole from Ibeku East 1 Ward who trained in UI/UX Design, expressed gratitude for the opportunity:

“This training has opened my eyes to global opportunities in the tech space. I’m already working on freelance projects, thanks to the skills I gained.”

Another beneficiary, Favour Chinonso Alozie-Nnaoma, who trained in Data Science, shared a similar sentiment:

“It’s amazing how much we’ve learned in such a short time. Senator Akobundu has truly changed lives with this initiative.”

The programme, which is free to participants, also provides access to mentors, project-based learning, and job placement support where possible.

Senator Akobundu has emphasized that the digital economy is the way forward for Nigeria’s youth:

“We must equip our young people with relevant digital skills. This is how we fight unemployment and position Abia Central for technological growth and competitiveness,” he stated in an earlier address.

The senator has reiterated his commitment to seeing this programme through to its goal of producing a new generation of digital innovators and entrepreneurs across Abia Central.

As the programme advances, stakeholders are calling on other political leaders to emulate Senator Akobundu’s developmental approach by initiating practical empowerment projects targeted at youth capacity building.
