…As Police Arrest Two Over Eha-Amufu Attack
…Enugu Among Few States With No Foreign Travel Warnings
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has reaffirmed that Enugu remains one of the safest states in Nigeria, dismissing online fear-mongering and pledging not to rest on the state’s current security successes.
Mbah made the remarks on Wednesday while receiving the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 13, AIG Abayomi Oladipo, at the Lion Building in Enugu.
He acknowledged recent challenges, including an attack on Eha-Amufu farm settlements that left several persons dead, but stressed that his administration had invested heavily in crime prevention infrastructure and would continue to take security seriously.
The governor said that Enugu’s economic ambition—to grow from $4.4 billion to $30 billion and become Nigeria’s top destination for investment and tourism—could only be achieved in a secure environment.
He highlighted the establishment of a Command and Control Centre, the creation of a Distress Response Squad with over 150 vehicles, and the deployment of AI-enabled surveillance cameras across the state.
“Enugu is the most secure city in the country, unarguably, save for people, who like to magnify things, and who believe that the security we enjoy in Enugu is disturbing them.
“So, they like to sometimes conjecture things to somehow entertain their views or opinions. What they do is to post or peddle falsehood on social media by going back to things that happened years ago to make them appear as if they are just happening. Also, things that happened elsewhere, they make it appear as if they are happening in Enugu.
“I have seen some images and videos recently of things that never happened here, but made to look as if they happened here in Enugu State.
“Therefore, if we discount those false narratives, those fake narratives that we hear from social media, Enugu as I mentioned, unarguably is the safest city in this country.
“But we are not going to rest on our oars. We have to see that our security agents are alive to their responsibilities, to their duties.
“We do not have any tolerance for insecurity, for crime in Enugu State. We are going to continue to work with the security agencies to ensure that we sustain this security we are enjoying in the state today.”
Earlier, AIG Oladipo praised Mbah for his administration’s collaboration with security forces, saying that the improved safety in Enugu was evident.
“I can tell you that what we have put in place is really working for us. I want to thank you for the support and your cooperation with the police and other security agencies of the state,” he stated.
His comments follow security briefings he received from the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Giwa, and Anambra’s CP Ikioye Orutugu, where new strategies for crime-fighting synergy were reviewed.
It is noteworthy that while the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) issued various travel advisories against 27 Nigerian states in its June 13, 2025 update—still valid as of June 18—Enugu State remained one of the few with no such warnings.
Meanwhile, in a related development, police operatives in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area have arrested two alleged collaborators in the Eha-Amufu attack: 26-year-old Matthew Ebeh and a female accomplice, both accused of aiding militant herders.
According to reports, Ebeh allegedly led the attackers into the community, while the woman is said to have sold out information on security movement. Their arrest followed a tip-off from a local resident who managed to escape the assault.
